 PRP Injections Q & A

What are PRP injections?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a substance found in your blood that contains growth factors. After you receive injections of PRP in areas of damaged soft tissue, the growth factors trigger your body’s production of new, healthy cells to replace those that are damaged.

As new cells grow, your body heals faster and more efficiently from injuries or disease. Because this treatment addresses the underlying cause of your pain, PRP therapy can provide lasting pain relief and reduce your reliance on medications.

Am I a candidate for PRP injections?

To determine if you’re a candidate for PRP injections, Dr. Huff reviews your personal and family medical histories, your diagnosis, and your symptoms. He also performs a physical exam and may order additional diagnostic tests to evaluate the extent of damage to your muscles or soft tissues.

Candidates for PRP injections include those who have persistent back pain, neck pain, or joint pain from conditions like:

  • Sciatica
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Soft tissue tears
  • Degenerative disc disease

You may also be a candidate for PRP injections if you have painful conditions like tendonitis or bursitis that result from overuse of your tendons and ligaments.

What can I expect during PRP injections?

PRP therapy is a two-step process that Dr. Huff performs in-office. He begins by drawing a sample of your blood to access the PRP he needs for your injection. A fast-spinning device known as a centrifuge separates the blood materials and produces a high concentration of PRP.

During the second part of your procedure, Dr. Huff injects PRP into your soft tissues or joints. To ensure the injection goes into the precise location within the tissue or joint, he may use ultrasound technology.

You can receive multiple injections during your appointment, depending on the size of the treatment area and the type of condition you have. Immediately after your PRP injections, you can return to your usual activities without limitations.

How long does it take to see the results of PRP injections?

While PRP injections can effectively relieve your pain and help you heal faster, the treatment doesn’t work instantly. It takes time for new cells to develop, so you may not notice the results of your injections for several weeks.

As new cells replace old ones, you should experience a reduction in inflammation and pain. Many people also see an increase in the range of motion in their muscles and joints.
